Accepting Winter
OK, let me purge it from my system: I absolutely hate the winter and I hate the cold. Every winter I ask myself how I came to live in Pittsburgh (which I actually love during all the other seasons).
There, I feel better now, having got that out….and ready to move on to making some winter photographs. Every year I struggle with getting out in the cold. Every year I do it a couple of times. This year I intend to do it more than a couple of times, particularly if it snows and particularly if it gets cold enough for Lake Arthur to freeze over.
To motivate myself, I am posting one of my favorite winter shots (from an admittedly small pool)!

I know the feeling Howard. I end up going out when I just can’t take it being indoors any longer. However, if I could be assured of scenes like this, you could put Eskimo as my middle name.
Thanks Mark. I hope to find more like this during the winter if I can. But it is amazing how familiarity seems dull…..I often feel exactly the same way viewing your images. Wouldn’t it be great to live there!
Good point about familiarity… I often think about that when I see people’s shots that live out near Yosemite and the like. Do they ever get bored?
I don’t know how they could ever get bored!
Interestingly places like Yellowstone or Yosemite are actually places that I have not had a strong interest in traveling to for photographing (I’m not saying I wouldn’t like to photograph there, just that if I had a limited number of destinations I could go to I am not sure I would choose them) simply because they have been done so many times that I think it would be hard to make something individualized or that reflects your specific vision in a week…..it would just be so overwhelming. But if you lived there I am sure you could get past all the ‘required’ shots and make some really personal photos.
Image like this will get me out every time, great shot !!
Thanks Bernie!
