Quantum Physics

It is interesting how the things you are reading or doing with your life at any particular time can affect what and how you see.  I happen to be reading In Search of Schrödinger’s Cat: Quantum Physics and Reality Quantum Physics by John Gribbin, which is both a history and an explanation in layman’s terms of quantum physics (no math involved).  It really is a fascinating story that brings the reader through the movement from classical to quantum physics in the early 20th century.

So it is any wonder that this pattern of shadows in my hallway (made by window blinds) caught my eye?  Light as both a wave and a particle?  Electron orbit energy levels?  Quanta of energy?

Do your window blinds consist of double-slits? :)

Connecting apparently disparate domains of knowledge is endlessly fascinating to me and this is a great example of what can emerge when these connections are made: an image that would not mean much on it’s own but, in the context you present it, becomes much more interesting.

I’m in the midst of a series of photoblog posts linking photography, plants and maths which I’m having a lot of fun researching and compiling!

Props for making it more than just a photo.

Thanks very much Adrian! They are, in fact, single slit shades :>)
The picture actually started me thinking about what other shadows might represent quantum mechanics concepts

Well I’m in the middle of “The Quantum Story: A History In 40 Moments”, but it is going to have to sneak up on my creative side, it is wearin’ my rational side out!
An interesting and elusive image by the way Howard. Nicely done!

Does the pattern exist without an observer there to photograph it?

Thanks Al. It IS mind bending stuff isn’t it! I just reached the end of Part One and it said the even wierder stuff is coming in Part Two…….

Now that is a great retort!!!!

This has renewed my interest in physics. Especially the photo. Excellent.

Thanks very much Ken. I have to say reading about this quantum physics is really mind expanding …. Really interesting stuff!
