Where I’ve Been

As I mentioned in my review of the Gura Gear Bataflae 32L, I recently had the opportunity to spend a week photographing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It really is a fantastic (and exhausting) experience to be able to devote a week to just photography, especially when you get to do it with a few similar minded friends!

Having returned, I have just finished the job of importing, keywording etc.  The editing job is now beginning.  Below is an early ‘pick’ that I put through some quick processing as a taste of more to come.  One of the defining characteristics of the Smokies is the amazing layering of the mountain ridges:

Interestingly, I took a series of exposures of this scene anticipating an HDR image but, while reviewing the photographs, realized that this single image really conveyed the feel of being there.  So why make life complicated.  This single exposure says it all.

Thanks very much Al! It was a great trip with some terrific people. I wish editing were as much fun as the shooting.

Great image, Howard. I usually shoot a range of exposures for possible HDR work later but find a single exposure usually works fine, partly due to the amount of data the D600 captures and the ability of Lightroom to make the most of it.

Thanks. In this case I really liked the underexposed image and merely darkening the normally exposed or overexposed images didn’t give the same feel. I did have to lighten the shadows a bit to bring out the different tones in the mountain ridges which brought up some noise. But noise reduction took care of that, particularly as there is not a whole lot of detail that is needed to be seen.

    Thanks for commenting!

I think nothing speaks the Smokies quite like these foggy ridges. Seems like you had a good trip and will be processing for awhile! :-)

Thanks. I will be editing and processing for a while! I’m hoping to try a few new things like the 32 bit Lightroom processing technique I posted. Nothing like a week away specifically for photographing. It would be nice to get a chance to do it more often.
